Why choose to enjoy the Red Deer Rut with Ecoturismo Cuenca?
5 main reasons for choosing the activity “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” with Ecoturismo Cuenca, to experience the most fascinating faunistic event during the fall at Serranía de Cuenca.
As the autumn doesn´t come unnoticed by those who live Nature in the Mediterranean Forest. From mid-September to mid-October, one of the most intense and fascinating phenomena of our forests takes place: the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Rut. It is a high-interested touristic event, so every year nature lovers have a wide range of activities organized by Ecotourism and Nature Tourism companies and operators. However, not all the activities related to the Rut are the same.
In Ecoturismo Cuenca we have developed a unique and exclusive experience to live the Red Deer Rut in its entire splendor, which takes place in the heart of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park , which is called “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut“. This year (2018) will be the fourth edition of the activity, and we want to commemorate this successful continuity by highlighting 5 fundamental reasons why we are proud to be able to ensure that our activity does not leave anyone indifferent.
1. We are pioneers in the organization of activities related with the Red Deer Rut at Serranía de Cuenca.

Ecoturismo Cuenca started its activity as an Active Tourism company and a Nature Tourism company in 2013, and since then we have begun to share the fascinating world of deer rut with visitors at Serranía de Cuenca. We were recognized by the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Foundation as an entrepreneur dedicated to bringing the wonders of our natural heritage to society. Since that year we began to organize activities related to the Red Deer Rut, looking for the best places and the best formats, at a time when our activities were the only ones available for visitors who wanted to enjoy the Rut in Cuenca city and surroundings. Always learning and improving, we finally found the best possible formula: “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut“, which year after year is more demanded by both visitors and locals, and which is now in its fourth edition.
2. “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” is developed in an outstanding natural site: the heart of the Natural Park Serranía de Cuenca.

Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, declared as a protected area since 2007, is located northeast of Cuenca province and includes some of the most impressive natural landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula, which stand out for the importance of its forests and its floristic, geological, geomorphological and faunal diversity. Its situation gives it a high biogeographic value, including valuable endemisms and protected species. Among mammals, undoubtedly the abundant populations of wild ungulates attract attention, standing out the populations of Red Deer and Fallow Deer (Dama dama).
Thus, “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” is an exceptional opportunity to enjoy these animals in a privileged environment, in addition to the observation of other species such as the Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) and the Mouflon (Ovis aries musimon), which can be seen frequently during the activity. Different raptors and some forest birds complement the diverse list of fauna species that we can observe.
3. We don´t resign to observe the Red Deer Rut: our activity also focuses on the Fallow Deer Rut.

As the Red Deer Rut goes off in the advance of the autumn, another fascinating faunistic behavior explodes in the forests of the Serranía de Cuenca. We refer to the Fallow Deer Rut, which coexists in the mountain forests with the Red Deer. The abundant populations of Fallow Deer in the Serranía de Cuenca make it a particularly suitable environment to discover this popular but unknown animal through its attempted reproductive period, so it could not be left out of “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut“.
4. It´s a 5 hour activity, designed and guided carefully by highly qualified local experts.

EcoturismoCuenca team is made up of Environmental Sciences professionals with postgraduate university education in the fields of ecology and conservation and wildlife management, and with extensive experience in work related to the biology and management of the RedDeer. Our training and vocation for the study and conservation of Nature, and our interest in its communication, has allowed us to develop numerous activities related to the observation of fauna throughout the province of Cuenca, all of them under the strictest scientific-technical rigor, but basing our communication strategies on the arts of interpretation of Nature and scientific dissemination.
The qualification and experience of our work team, companions of the adventure at “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” along with the participants of the activity, guarantees a complete and well-designed activity, organized and conducted in various aspects: (1) a duration of 5 hours, which includes an interpretative walk, an interactive speech, listening and observation of red deer, fallow deer and other species of fauna and a snack; (2) is suitable for audiences of all ages; (3) it´s developed with small groups every day; and (4) it supports the best technical materials (telescopes and binoculars) and didactic materials, specifically designed for the activity.
5. “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” is an activity committed to the principles of Ecotourism and responsible Nature Tourism.
Trabajamos con las bases éticas del ecoturismo en el desarrollo de nuestras actividades.
In Ecoturismo Cuenca we design and organize all our activities in compliance with the principles and professional ethics of Ecotourism and Responsible Nature Tourism. Thus, in “Discover the secrets of the Red Deer Rut” we encourage the conservation of the natural heritage through its knowledge and enjoyment, we do not interfere in the natural phenomena object of observation (the activity does not contemplate the use of motor vehicles and the animals are never disturbed), and we encourage the development of the rural economy. In this way, we comply with the Declaration of Daimiel (2016), in which Ecotourism is defined as the trip to a natural area to know it, interpret it, enjoy it and explore it while appreciating and contributing in a practical way to its conservation, without generating negative impacts on the environment and having a positive impact on the local population.
Other signs of our commitment in this regard are our participation in conservation activities and projects on a voluntary basis, such as the `Support a Rock´ campaign (IGME) and the `Entre Hoces´ Project, which was selected as the winning project in the I Concurso + Patrimonio and which The City of Cuenca Prize was awarded in its “Promotion of Cuenca” modality for its contribution to the dissemination of Cuenca’s natural heritage. In addition, through our gift cards, we donated 5% of the proceeds to local NGOs involved in the conservation of nature; since 2015 we are part of the Ecotourism Association of Castilla-La Mancha and Ecoclub; and we participate in meetings, discussion forums or any activity related to the development of our province, betting on quality tourism.
